One of the key objectives of the Engage 2 ATM concepts roadmap is to present an innovative set of concepts extending beyond the SESAR 3 timeframe, with emerging and distinctive relevance to ATM. The roadmap’s development takes into account information on R&D topics, concepts, future priorities and challenges, existing research within the main SESAR programme, and links with other initiatives beyond ATM.
This work builds on the foundation work of the original Engage KTN (2018-2022). While the new ATM concepts roadmap is being developed, the version produced by the previous KTN is retained below. The new roadmap will be published on this page in 2026.
The Engage 2 roadmap will highlight the main trends selected by an AI-based trend analysis, looking 30 years ahead. Initial analyses have processed over 500 ATM-related documents, consisting of conference papers, SESAR project deliverables and JU reference material.
Until the new roadmap is released, ten of the trends produced by the initial analyses by the GenAI (generative artificial intelligence) models, are provided for interim reference:
- Electrification and advanced battery technologies
- Synthetic fuels and direct air capture integration
- Global seamless biometric security and identity
- Digital twin airspace simulation and management
- Biodegradable and smart aircraft materials
- Unmanned freight and cargo drones
- On-Demand, personalised air travel
- Integration of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS)
- Advanced U-space and UAS traffic management
- Space-based multilateration and satellite surveillance
