EUROCONTROL (Belgium) - ATM Research Trainee - Performance Estimation

Traineeship assignment description

Within the scope of AMPLE3 Project, WP05 on Deployment Monitoring, there is the need to estimate what performance benefits have been brought by deployed SESAR Solutions at ECAC level. In order to achieve this goal, innovative estimation methods are to be used for the first time in the ATM Performance domain, leveraging existing data stemming from e.g., the Aviation Intelligence Unit (AIU) and LSSIP+.

In this context, it is desired that causality models are used to estimate the impact of SESAR deployment into the evolution of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) monitored by the EUROCONTROL AIU. Amongst these models, an option could be to make use of SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) machine learning models to be able to derive how SESAR Solutions deployment directly impact KPIs (in absolute and relative terms), by training the AI model with existing time-series historical data starting from 2002 and to the extent possible given different data granularity and number of observations depending on the indicator. Other machine learning methods could be investigated. The proposed internship will start with a sighting of the available data which then could lead to proposing a suitable modelling technique.

Outcomes of this research are expected to be used by the trainee for the purpose of his/her/their PhD thesis through papers' publication in appropriate scientific journals. In addition, further research concerning application of causality estimation methods for ATM Performance domain is desired.

Desired trainee profile

For this traineeship, a PhD student (preferable) in Applied Statistics to the ATM Performance domain is desired, preferably in his/her/their 1st or 2nd year. In order to successfully undertake the assignment for this traineeship, the trainee shall have:

  • Academical background in Applied Statistics, preferably attested by a Masters' Degree.
  • IT programming skills, preferably in Python programming language.
  • Understanding of ATM and the SESAR Programme.
  • Experience in writing scientific papers.

This traineeship is intended for a duration of 6-12 months at EUROCONTROL Headquarters in Brussels.
